Day Three – ADRIDP

Today we visited the Association for the Defense of the Rights of Internally Displaced Persons in Nazareth. This NGO works to protect the rights of Arab Israelis who were moved from their ancestral villages, and not allowed to return, after the 1948 war. While UN Resolution 194 protects their rights of return, the Israeli government hasn't allowed the indigenous population to return to their homes, even in those rare circumstances when the Supreme Court has decided in their favor. These villages either remain uninhabited or were replaced with Israeli towns.

The right of return remains one of the thorniest parts of the ongoing negotiations for a lasting peace in the region. While many of those who have the right of return under International Law have moved across the globe and may not wish to return, compensation for them would need to be addressed in such peace talks.
